Make a Bathroom For 18inch American Girl Dolls!

Greetings and Salutations Doll Friends!

As I may have mentioned before, I am a member of a group on Facebook called "My Dolls House". It's a group of people, mostly women and their daughters or granddaughters, who love all things American Girl or other 18" Doll related. They make the most amazing and intricate houses for their dolls! I get so much inspiration from them. Which leads to today's post! It had never even occurred to me to make a bathroom for my dolls before having joined the group. I mean, I guess I always thought one of the perks of being a doll is you don't need a bathroom. Teehee. However, after seeing all the clever and imaginative bathrooms being created by the ladies in the group, I started to think it might be fun. Didn't really pursue it though because you really do need to buy a few very specialized components for a bathroom. The most important thing, which makes it look like an actual bathroom, is a toilet!

Well, I guess this doll bathroom was providence because, low and behold, I found this toilet at Goodwill for $2.99. It's made to be a change bank but the bottom door, where change is meant to be kept, is broken off. However, was perfect for my intended use!! Nearly perfect scale and even more like a real toilet than a lot of the ones actually made for dolls! So I bought it and set it aside to think of how I might make the other components of a bathroom... A bathtub is really, well, a large tub of some sort. 'Real' bathtubs come in all shapes and sizes after all. I just needed to find the right basin or tub to make it. Another trip to Goodwill later, I found this awesome silver box that I am guessing came with gifted bath products or something. It was only 99cents and so I figured I had very little to lose! Ironically enough, I found the roll of fancy printed duct tape during same Goodwill trip for 99cents too! I thought they'd make a perfect tub when put together!

As an aside, two things; First, yes, I go to Thrift Stores a lot. It is, I find, one of my best sources for things to make over for dolls but you have to go pretty often to find the gems. I stop in a couple times a week as I am out on errands. Secondly, about the duct tape, it was a really great find because I am pretty frugal and would never probably spend the $4 a roll it costs in the stores. So, it was providence, truly, that it be part of my tub design. It's even in a 'modern fun print' as I wanted to make my bathroom a bit modern as a nod to my sweet daughter. She loves the doll house but the kitchen and living room's are certainly decorated to my taste, not hers. She, like many girls her age, loves bright colors and fun prints. So, I figured the bathroom would be a great place to do those fun colors.

So here are the first components of my tub. The regular duct tape I owned already. I wanted to tape around the whole thing so it would cover the "handle" holes and wanted it to be sturdy so I figured I'd do the plain tape around it and then cover it with the fancy type.

It came out pretty great! The tape is a bit puckered in places which drove my TypeA personality a bit nuts but it looks good enough. I wasn't sure how I'd do the "plumbing" on my tub and it looked pretty un-tub-like still without it. (Forgot to photo without, sorry! You can imagine it though right?) So I asked my dear husband if he had any thoughts and/or supplies I could use to make a faucet and handles? He is a genius! He also has a lot of plumbing supplies in our garage because of his job. So he helped me out with this faucet handle combo and I love how it came out. It looks old fashioned because of the copper! He used 1/2inch copper tubing (I think, I'll come back later to correct if I am recalling correctly but Dear Husband is still sleeping like most normal people at 5AM) and some various hardware to create the plumbing. As you can see, the 'handles' needed to be put in place with hot glue because they were 'loose' around the pipes. I'll try and find names for all of the hardware and come back to tell you the information... Essentially you can to just try and find hardware or whatzits around your house that might work but I realize that not everyone keeps such things around. Sometimes, it pays to be a packrat. Eh?

So here is the completed bathroom!! In these photos, I hadn't 'plummed' the sink yet. I was so excited about the tub that I just put it all together and took photos because I was excited to show it. What's funny is it didn't even occur to me immediately that the same 'pipes' that worked for the bathtub might also work for the 'sink' but... After I took these photos, the light bulb went off in my head.

So here is a photo with the 'plumbed' sink. It's just a length of that copper tubing, cut to size and bent over to make it look like a tall faucet. It doesn't have handles, the sink but I don't think it's all that big a deal. I used the 'bowl' as the sink because I wanted it to look like a lot of the modern day bathroom sinks that have a 'bowl' basin. The bowl is an old school melamine sugar dish, minus the lid. I think it's perfect and I, being me, had it on hand. You could find any bowl that suits you for your 'sink' though. The 'dresser' portion of the sink was also found at, you guessed it, a Thrift Store! It was only $2.99! I am considering re-painting it to match the bathtub and/or using some of the fancy duct tape on it so it really matches but I am holding off because I could also use it as a dresser in the 'bedroom' of the house... So I am holding off on painting it for now.

As you can see, I am very technical! Um, no. I just duct taped the faucet to the back of the dresser. Another cool part about being able to take off the faucet is that I'll be able to use it to make a 'kitchen' sink in my kitchen scenes. A lot of the ladies that are in the My Doll House group make every thing in their houses more 'permanent' because they actually have big 'box like' rooms that they keep everything in. So if that is you, you'll just have to make two of the faucets!

I am really pleased with how it turned out. I need more 'art' for the walls and may make a special background.... but all things in good time. It's fun that it's all always a work in progress. It always keeps me coming back to create more fun stuff!

In an upcoming Blog post, I plan to tell you all about the recent arrival we had in the doll house. I bought a Liberty Landing doll on eBay recently. She was only $7.50 and I was very curious about her because I guess Liberty Landing dolls were a 'cheaper alternative' to Pleasant Company (American Girl) Dolls back in the 1990's. However, when she came, her dress smelled a bit musty, like she'd been in storage a long time and her wig was a nightmare. Just horrid! So, she screamed "I need a makeover!!" to me. I am working on her as we speak and will have the big reveal soon. The reason I bring all this up, other than to let you know what is coming, is to say that it was a perfect time to have a new doll bathroom! Liberty needed to clean up!!

Here she is in a nice hot bath run by Saige, who, like all the other dolls, is trying to make her feel right at home. Always room for another doll in the Doll Sorority! Love abounds!

I forgot, earlier, to take a good photo of the 'plumbing' on the tub, so here it is. I will photo the back side of it too and update later! My husband was so clever in how he did it!

Doesn't Liberty have the cutest feet? I think she does! Can't wait for the big reveal of her makeover! Stay tuned!!

Thanks again for dropping by, Doll Friends! We will see you next time!

A Tale Of Three Doll Loo's! Win A Doll Potty!

Greetings Doll Friends!

I recently made a portable doll house called Heartland Doll House for an idea I had with my lovely friend Patti from The Treasure Trove Antiques and Tea Room to have Doll Tea Parties. We did a few of them and they were so much fun.

Sadly, having a full time job and a family and trying to write this blog... Well, I just don't have the ongoing time to invest in continuing to put together and host Doll Tea Parties. So, I handed the Doll House over to Patti for her to use in upcoming Doll Tea Parties so I could turn my focus back to what I really enjoy... Creating or finding doll items and telling you about them. I am happy to report that Patti has gotten bitten by the Doll Bug and that alone will have made my time and energy into creating the Heartland Doll House worth it all.

However, there was one room that I was reticent to give up permanently from my own Doll House... The Bathroom! It's come a long way from it's original inception... I don't think I even ever wrote about getting the sink from Amazon now that I look for the post I thought I did. LOL I tell you, a blog post lives a long time in my brain before it makes it out in photos and words and I guess sometimes I think I've made a post and it's never left the space between my ears. Hahaha!

So I wanted to be able to both leave a bathroom in the Heartland Doll House and have one in my own... So what to do? Doll toilets are not the easiest thing to find! I mean, American Girl just came out with a bathroom for Julie that has a toilet which is super-de-dooper-adorable but also $195!! I have been a member of doll groups on Facebook for a while though and so I know that popular options for toilets are the toilet bank like I had used and... There was a potty training doll from Fisher Price called Little Mommy Gotta Go Doll once that has a toilet and sink combo that also is pretty close to the right scale. However, they can get rather pricey on eBay. So when I saw this one on eBay for only $20 plus shipping, I excitedly snapped it up. This way I could review it for you and then give it over to Patti so she'll have a bathroom in the Heartland Doll House. Win win!!

It arrived pretty quickly and it is so cute!! As you can see, it's all one piece, the toilet and sink are hooked together by a plastic 'wainscoting' and honestly match my Our Generation Bathtub almost perfectly. Right? Patti told me that she'd go ahead and get a tub of her own to match the new toilet sink or perhaps even make them a shower instead. So she'll have a great bathroom!

Here is Estella washing her hands at the sink. Perfect size, right?

One feature of this toilet is that when you push down the handle, the 'water' spins and has two sides, the clean water side and the 'poopy' side. Every single time I see the 'poopy side' I giggle. "Even dolls poop!" runs in my head. Hahaha! We used to have a kids book called Everyone Poops and sure enough... Even the dolls!

Anyway, sadly, this toilet must have been flushed one too many times because instead of the default being the pretty clean water, the poop is always showing. Bummer! I mean, the flushing sound works great with the batteries in... But it will always look like someone forgot to flush. Stinker! Literally! (Teehee... Ok, I'll stop with the toilet humor but it really is the perfect place for it, right?)

So if you're looking to make a doll bathroom for less than $195, that might be an option for you... Still, even if you can get the toilet for about $30 like I did, once you add the OG Bathtub, you're at $60 and that's not nothing...

"Hey! A little privacy please!!"
(Kidding. I had to show you how well she sits on the toilet)

She can sit rather well...

Just for good comparison sake, I went ahead a took a few new photos of my own toilet and sink combo in same space so you'd be able to better guage the size differences and simularities.

I really do love my doll bathroom. I cna't help it, it makes me smile.

One of the best parts about the toilet bank option is that the toilet can sit right down into the OG Bathtub for storage! As I've mentioned before, I try to make all my doll rooms as portable and storable as possible because I don't really have the space in my Doll Room to keep a doll house up all the time so I usually only have a few rooms up at a time... So it's always good for items to pack away easily together.

As I mentioned, $60 is still a little steep for a Doll Bathroom especially if you're on a budget... I remember when I first started making a doll house, there were so many rooms I wanted and so little money to make them real. So I was hoping to figure out some good option for people on a budget but who aren't quite crafty enough to make a toilet like the genius who writes American Girl Ideas. Then, low and behold, like the day after I order the Fisher Price toilet, what do I see at the Walmart clearance section but a doll potty!? For $1.50!!

Now, mind you, it's not quite as realistic as the other two options but the price is way more comfortable!! Also, I think the dolls will sit easier on this one than the other two... There is a little lever on the left hand side that you can even 'flush' this one too. Pretty cute considering the price!!

So I had to pick one up because I knew I was going to write this blog post! Haha. I don't need yet another doll toilet though! So... Since last week's doll drawing give-away was so popular, I've decided that this little potty will be my next drawing give-away! Just the potty itself, not the rest of the items in the photo... Just to clarify! Don't want anyone disappointed when their potty arrives by itself.

How do you enter drawing? Easy-peasy-lemon-squeezy!! Just like last week, you just go and 'like' the PCR American Doll House Facebook Page and share the post there about the contest on your own Facebook page. That's it, super easy!

I will draw the name of the contest winner on Sunday September 10, 2017 at  6PM Central Standard Time.
*Contest only open to people in the United States or APO addresses due to postage costs!!*
(Sorry international readers, I only have so much money to devote to my little blog here)

So if you're wanting a doll toilet, maybe you can win this one?! Good Luck!!

See? She sits pretty well on this one too! Too cute.

Better run!

My Life As Doll Bathroom Set In The Doll House!

Doll Friends!!

I found one!! I found one!! I found the new My Life As Doll Bathroom Set from Walmart!!!

It's fantastic!!! Really, they did a great job on this. I've long looked Julie's Bathroom from American Girl Doll and pined over having one myself... But really if I am spending $195 on a bathroom it's going to be the one I actually take showers in myself. Haha. I even 'made' a bathroom for my own doll house that's gone through many 'updates' over the years. However I always wanted a 'shower' in my doll bathroom because, let's get real, more people take showers than take baths so... Or at least in my house/world.

So My Life As Doll releasing one for $39.99...? Well, even if I already had a bathroom in the Doll House, that had to happen. It was the thing I was most excited about of all the things I've seen My Life As Doll come out with this year and I am so stoked to have found it. I suspect it'll be a 'hot toy' and harder and harder to find as we go towards Christmas. Perhaps I'll be wrong and they'll, for once, have enough made to meet demand. I'll hope so!!

Here is Heather Doll reading the back of the box.

Here is the back of the box so you can see the whole thing.

Here is the UPC. I have found that some people want the UPC in order to locate the items in the store...? I am not internet savvy enough to know how to do this but in case you are, here you go.

Here is the front of the box.

Here are the accessories it comes with; a cute toothbrush, tube of toothpaste, a cup, conditioner and shampoo! All the essential items for your doll to get ready for the day!

The toilet really 'flushes'. If you want to see it in action, there is a great YouTube video of it by Chloe's Playroom!

The lights work as well! So fun!

It was pretty easy to get out of the box especially compared to some set's I've unboxed before. Just a few zip ties to cut....

There is one here too... and the toilet is held in place by:

a zip tie and...

This little dohickey. I imagine they had to 'bolt' it in so it wouldn't shift around or fall out of package. But just know it's there so your little one doesn't get frustrated when the "toilet won't come out of the shower!!"

There are clear bands at both the tie and the...

curtain rings to keep it from moving around.

This was weird... The bands were 'stuck' in the wall... Not sure if it just mine or not and naturally I cut them off as close to the wall as I could but... Like I say, weird.

The cabinet is taped shut so it won't open in packaging and get damaged or broken.

Same with the toilet. The tape comes off very easily though and leaves no sticky residue.

So here it is, all set up!

As I was taking photos of Heather Doll in the mirror I giggled in mirth because the mirror, being a 'toy' mirror and not actual glass (because: toy!) the effect is a bit like the fun house mirrors in the carnivals I went to as a child. It distorts your image just a bit... So... Naturally I took like five photos to show you what I mean and giggle with me. Heather Doll won't mind you laughing at her, she laughed too. ;)

Ok... I'll stop. Heeheehee...

Heather Doll is going to brush her teeth in the cute sink!

Good oral hygiene is so important! Teeth, you only get two sets! Take care of them! Eh?

The toothbrush is cool in that it has a handle that lets the doll hold it. Neat!

When she was done, Heather put the items in the little cupboard. She likes her bathroom to be tidy after all.

She wanted to show you the shower so don't mind her being in there with her clothes on!

The shower curtain closes well and covers everything. Yes, Heather Doll is in there.

The toilet is cute... Like the review by Chloe's Playroom said, you can't really get the dolls to sit on the toilet like they would if there were actually, well, you know, using the toilet. But I don't think too many doll photos will be taken of my dolls sitting on the loo so for me it's not that big a deal.

I love that the toilet seat actually goes up and down. Awesomeness! Not just the lid to the toilet but the seat as well!

Heather Doll says "Don't forget to put the seat down!"

So... I think this is a great set especially for the price... Snap one up for your dollies and I am sure they'll love it!

Better run!
