Doll Armatures or Dolly Get's a Spine!

Greetings and Salutations Doll Friends!
I've had the draft of this post uploaded for ever so long but am just now getting a chance to come and write up the rest! I tell you, real life keeps me way too busy lately and there is never enough time to play dolls. Hahaha. Such problems! Actually, one of my problems is a am always burning my way into a new project and oftentimes I seem to neglect coming to write them about them... I think I have about six drafts waiting at this moment, in fact. I digress... On to the dolls!

As you may or may not recall, I reccently got a beautiful Postively Perfect Divah Doll. I wrote all about her here. As I mentioned in that post, I wanted to figure out a way to help this beautiful doll stand up and sit better. The bodies on the dolls, as made, are designed much the same as 'baby dolls' in that the body is 'floppy'. Which is great for girls who like to have slumber parties with their dolls and want to sleep with them. However, it makes them really hard to pose in either standing or sitting positions. So, after reasearching all my options, I decided that I was going to attempt inserting an armature (think doll skeleton) into her. Yes, I decided to give her a spine! Teehee.

The longest part of this procedure ended up being waiting for the armature to arrive after I ordered it off eBay. It came all the way from China and, considering that, really didn't take too long in the big scheme... It took about three weeks. I didn't know which size to order, for sure, so I ordered one that was listed as '20inch doll armature'. I researched first and realized that the little 'beads' on the armature were removable and so I could just 'trim off' any length in the arms or legs I didn't need and I knew for sure it wouldn't be too long. Also, I found a cheaper auction for the 20" one by quite a few bucks and, well, I am me. Ha!

Above is the only real 'tutorial' I found in all of Internetland! I found all manner of videos on YouTube about how to make armatures out of wire (Um, not that brave yet) and/or how to install them into dolls of other mediums, like clay. Not what I was looking for. So, I looked at the basic principle of the idea and decided "How hard could it be?"

Finally, the armature arrived! I was so excited that even though I was due to go have lunch with my amazing girlfriends, I brought the doll, my sewing kit and armature along. I knew it wouldn't take long in actual work time and I can talk and work at same time afterall!

So I roughly measured how long I thought armature should be before I opened up dolls back stitching by laying armature on back of doll.

Then I very carfeully opened her back stitches. It was kind of tricky around her back tag and I wasn't going to attempt to put it back on after I was done because that would be tricky. She has her butterfly kiss on her neck, anyway, to identify her doll type. Right?

So I wasn't quite prepared for what I found when I opened her up. (I now feel for Doctors who say that exact thing when opening up live patients! How much it took me aback and this is just a doll!!)

1)She had/has this long cardboard bit coming out of her head. I discovered it was the closest thing she had to a spine really because it kept her head from being floppy. I tried to take it out and just have armature hold her up but it didn't work very well, so I kept both in there and just put armature up close-by to the carboard bit. I was going to use a zip tie to hold them together but decided that made her too rigid and left them unattached.

2)Her leg and arms were 'closed' with only a small hole in the middle. I almost cried when I saw that because my whole plan was to insert the armature up and down the legs! After checking, I realized that the armature would go into the holes, but you have to kind of force it down into them and only push it in as deep as you want it to stay. It's all a bit of trial and error, but if you push them in too far, it's a bit tricky to pull them back out, so just go a bit at a time and go equally deep with both legs and arms and you'll do fine.

I didn't really take as many pictures as I might ought have but the basic procedure is to remove her stitches, take out all of her stuffing (put in a bag as you go so you can put back in and I also added a bit more polyfill to make her more 'dense' when I put it back in), insert armature into her arms and legs and line it up as best as you can with head/cardboard part, then re-stuff her well and sew her back up. Easy-peasy-lemon-squeezy. Well, maybe not that easy but it wasn't that hard either. I kept reminding myself how great it would be when I was done, being able to have her sit up strait and stand and just kept going with it.

I learned AFTER I was done that you're supposed to have pliers to pull the armature beads apart. I about ripped my fingers off trimming mine down, so, yeah, learn from my pain and use pliers! I found they sell specialized ones but I can't see how they'd be different, too much, from kind you probably have in your garage so... Up to you how much you want to invest I suppose. I don't think I'll be doing a lot of armatures and I'll probably buy the right size next time, the 18inch kind. Haha!

After getting her all done, I happened to be browsing in Hobby Lobby and asked if they, on an off chance, had doll armatures. Low and behold, they totally do!! So you can get an 18" doll armature at Hobby Lobby for about $8! Lots better than having to wait for three weeks!!

Here is how the cardboard bit coming out of her head looked.

And minus all the stuffing!

After armature inserted.

Stitches to close her up.

Standing on her own!!!

All dressed and standing up!

That's it Doll Friends!! Hope, if you find and fall in love with a doll who needs a spine, you'll not be afraid to help her out now! Leave any questions in comments! See you next time!!

Positively Perfect Divah Dolls, A Review!

Greetings Doll Friends!

So recently the kids were home from school on Spring Break. In 'real life', I work from home doing Admin work, which is a great bonus for a Mom with school age children. However, as perfect as a balance it is able to keep in my life, it doesn't negate the fact that when the kids are home and I am trying to work, it's a bit stressful. Don't get me wrong, I have great kids! They're kids though and kids need attention and... Well, it's a bit stressful. So after I made it through the week of the kids being home, my dear, sweet, kind, best friend, husband of nearly 24 years decided to buy me a treat. Now... Some girls like flowers... Some girls like jewelry... Some girls like getting nails done and spa treatments as treats. Not this girl. My husband knows me well. He said "Why don't we give you a generous budget to buy some doll(s)?" He knows me so well! He didn't stipulate the amount or type of dolls, just the budget. He knows me well enough to know that I pinch pennies until they squeal!

So, the first purchase I made was of a doll I'd been curious about for a while. They are only about $20 at Walmart.com. Since I've gotten her and spoken of her to other Doll Moms, I've discovered that some Walmart locations are clearance selling them out for $5 each but I haven't been lucky enough to find them in my actual Walmart at all, much less for $5!! Some Walmart's must be cooler than others!

Here she is! A Positively Perfect Divah Doll! They are so beautiful! I love their faces! These lovely dolls have their own website if you want to see the whole line! The website is here.

There are several to choose from by I chose the Latina Divah. I had her shipped to my local store so I wouldn't have to pay shipping and was so excited to go pick her up when she arrived!

I was really impressed by their packaging. Not a ton of ties and bindings and extra stuff to fill the landfills. Just a few rubber bands and some tape to remove and she was out of the box!

Each P.P.D. Doll has a 'butterfly kiss' somewhere on her body. Every review I've seen of them has it being on the back of the neck but maybe I just haven't run across someone who has one that has a 'kiss' in a different location.

I really really wanted to love this doll. Her face is so pretty! Her hair quality seems good. It's rooted and plentiful. The body of the dolls, though, has a bit of a design flaw. She is designed like a baby doll, with a soft body and non-pose-able limbs. Bummer! She can't stand up and she can't really sit down very properly either. Such a shame. So I started researching what I might be able to do about it on the Internet. Because I LOVE her face. Love it!! I played with the idea of a whole body transplant with a doll from Micheal's or something. The problem was the skin tone of the dolls I found there were not correct. Her legs and arms wouldn't match her face! That won't work. So, more research...

That is when I 'met' someone online who had several of this very same sort of doll but hers were standing up and pose-able!? HOW?! She advised that she had inserted a doll armature into her body. A doll armature, I've discovered, is kind of like a doll skeleton. You put it inside of dolls and it helps them stand up strait. So... I found one on eBay and will be performing a skeleton implant on her as soon as it arrives. I am a bit nervous I'll mess up but I guess I figure the only thing I have to lose is that I'll have to go back to planA and give her a whole body transplant.

So that is it for PartOne of the story.... Stay tuned for after the armature arrives and I insert it!

Meanwhile, I am trying to figure out a name for my new doll... Any suggestions? I'll come back and update blog when I decide.

Have a great day Doll Friends!!

Beautiful Madame Alexander 18inch Doll Find At Flea Market!

Greetings and Salutations Doll Friends!

Ok friends... Clearly I have a problem and need intervention. I just can't seem to stop adding dolls to the Doll House! It's not my fault! They find me and follow me home I swear!! I am like the Pied Piper of dolls! Teeheehee. Seriously though, they find me. Ok, maybe I am kidding... Maybe if I didn't intentionally put myself in their paths all the time on purpose they'd have less of a chance, eh? Case in point? Well, after church on Sunday my daughter said "Lets run by the flea market and check out the Toy Ladies Booth." So I said "Sure, maybe she'll have gotten in some 'new' doll clothes... Why not?" (I am a sucker for doll clothes when I can get them for $1-2 an item)

So in we go and immediately I see that The Toy Lady (that's what we call her, we should really find out her real name. I like her immensely, she's one of those who's polite but sort of reserved until she gets to know you a bit and warms up more... but I digress...) Anyway she had not one, not two, but five 18inch dolls. Uh oh. At first I only saw the two of them were Our Generation, very cute but I have loads of OG's and so not too tempting. One of them I thought "Oh, maybe she'd be worth buying for her fancy dress and shoes though...." Until the Toy Lady says "I have a couple I am working on cleaning up, do you want to see them?" Sure... Why not. Uh oh again...

And out she brought a doll who's been on my wish list on Amazon for, like, years. Uh oh. I don't need any more dolls! I just got a doll for my birthday that I adore!! But... Look at her!! So. Totally. Beautiful!! You can't touch her for less than $50 on Amazon and if you're luck enough to find her on eBay her hair is usually rather tattered and/or she's really expensive there too. The Toy Lady used to charge about $8 for her 18inch dolls but has recently marked them to $10. Which, to her credit, she cleans them up and puts them in nice outfits and they are worth that I am sure being as she had to buy them somewhere herself... Not like a thrift store where they can mark things cheaper because they are all donated. So, reasonable when you take all that into account.

This little ladies hair was actually in pretty good shape and she was perfect in every way... Except...

Her bottom half, where her body is stuffed, was very wibbly and wobbly and she couldn't stand up without being leaned against something and, well, if you look at the photos you can tell that around her hips, the stuffing seems almost totally missing. She must've just been stored improperly by her prior owner (kids and toys, they're not always gentle... It is what it is). My only pause before I bought her was "Can I fix her?"

I had performed surgery on a Madame Alexander doll with a wibby torso before though so I decided I'd bring her home and give it a try. Because she's just gorgeous and, well, someone needs to fix her!!

So home she came and I almost immediatlely set to work....

Side note, there is a reason I am always 'behind' on blog posts I want to do. Like the 'pet' posts or the post I want to do about the doll ponies and horses I've accumulated... They always get pushed back on the 'To Do' list by things that I find along the way. Haha. This girl needed emergency surgery though! Her back was broken! Priorities. Right? Never fear, all the blog posts in my mental 'to do' list are like splinters that have to work their way out eventually so I'll get them written someday. Haha.

So I opened her up and pulled out all her stuffing.. Figured she might as well get brand new polyfill fluff if I am going to open her up.

Then, I was shocked to find she has no armature at all?! Take a look at that other posting (link above or here's the link again). That doll had an armature hooking her arms to her legs. Not this doll!? What to do? Well... I thought I could try and make an armature...? But I know she didn't come with one and I assume she was once able to stand by herself.... So I simply stuffed her torso very tightly with the polyfill and hoped for the best.

Here she is, all stitched up after surgery. I am alwasy shocked at how few stitches the manufacturers of Madame Alexander dolls put in their doll's backs (I've opened up a couple now so I notice...) When I stitch them closed, I can't help but make more stitches. My Granny is watching from Heaven afterall and she taught me right.

She stands just fine now!! Isn't she lovely!? I put her in a new outfit I just got made by Creatology (sold at Michael's Craft Store) because I had a 50% off coupon burning a hole in my pocket. It looks perfect on her!

She was so excited to find out that not only was she going to get a whole new home, she'd have oodles of new friends and a great wardrobe!

I think she'll be very happy here. We are sure glad to have her! I've named her Bobbie Blue after a friend of mine from church. I love her!

Better run!
Till Next Time!

New Custom Linda Mason Bumbleberry Doll Hybrid At The Doll House!

Greetings and Salutations Doll Friends!

I've made another custom hybrid doll... I couldn't help it, all the details of this doll just fell into place.

Here she is after I was all done. Isn't she beautiful?

Here is the original doll I took the head from.

She was really dirty and had been 'loved' and played with a lot. Her wig was a total mess...

When I first found her I thought she was a porcelain doll and they have never been my thing. But I always check to be sure... And when I checked this little gal, I discovered she was vinyl. Not only that but she was marked on back of neck by a signiture reading: 'Linda Mason 2008'. What? Where did this doll come from...? So I plunked down the $2.00 and took her home to do more research.

Here is what her body looks like, constructed a lot like most porcelain dolls with an armature inside.

She'd been played with so much that her armature had shifted and you could feel it right against the cloth on her back. Kind of creepy feeling honestly...

She also had a rip on the 'elbow' of one arm.

I could tell that her hands and feet were also done by Linda Mason because they were adorable. They reminded me a lot of the hands and feet of my Starpath Doll. Starpath dolls were also sculpted by Linda Mason and so no surprise.

So it felt like kind of a shame to know I planned to give her a body transplant and would be loosing the cute hands and feet. But her body type was no good in clothes and also I think her original body looked too big for her head...?

When I researched I could not really find one thing about this doll....? I did find one photo of a 'new'  doll like her that made me realize she was wearing some parts of her 'meet' outfit when I found mine.

But like I say, I couldn't find any information on her really...?

The closest I came was these 'Fairy Tale Lessons' dolls but it says they are 23 inches, not 18 inches... So not the same. How curious!

Perhaps you, dear reader, are familiar with who she was and can let me know in comments.

The first thing I did when I got her home was to clean up her face and re-wig her. I had this little pixie cut wig on hand and when I put it on her I knew it was the one that would stay on. The dark brown hair really made her green eyes pop!

But where to get a body for transplant? Hmmmm....

And wouldn't you know it? Amazon practically read my mind and had a sale on Bumbleberry Cassidy for less than $12.00! They just kept marking them down!

I sometimes pop things I am thinking of getting in my 'cart' at Amazon and they kept giving me messages like this. I couldn't help myself. It did sort of sadden me to think of snatching the body of a brand new doll but.... What can you do?

So it took the customary two days for the doll to get here...

Here is the new one next to the one I got last week. I decided I'd compare and see which I thought had the better eye placement... I even asked my husbands opinion and we both agreed that the newer doll (on left) was the one with the most evenly placed eyes. So... the one from last week was the one I'd be taking the body from.

See how her right eye is placed a bit lower than the left? Tough break kid. Hahaha.

Pre surgery...

And afterwards...

I love love love how she came out. An original hybrid doll for less than $15. What's not to love about that?

I am still considering names... I'll come back and update when I decide.

Here she is next to Star. They certainly look like siblings or at least cousins!

Better run!
